So far this year we have admitted over 185 casualty foxes , including around 85 cubs. In 2013 we took in just under 550 casualties – a considerably lower number than usual, which reflects our perceived drop in fox numbers in the south east. We fear this decline may continue. It seems likely fox, badger and rabbit numbers, in particular, being burrowing animals, were hard hit by the wet 2013 spring and it looks worryingly as if 2014′s late winter weather will have had a similar effect. Last year’s figure included around 220 fox cubs, most of which were subsequently rehabilitated safely back into the wild.
Moving to Broadwater Forest Wildlife Hospital has improved our operations very considerably over the past two years and is still developing as funds permit.
